Sagittarius was also known to the Babylonians as Nergal, the god of war and death, who ruled over the netherworld. Astrologically, the Babylonians associated Nergal with the planet Mars, which is how he also developed into the Greek and Roman counterpart, Ares, and Mars, respectively. Nergal appears as a creature that is similar to a centaur carrying a bow and arrow, as well as having two heads and a scorpion’s stinger.
There are debates over which centaur in Greek mythology best represents the constellation Sagittarius. One possible myth was about the centaur Chiron, one of the most beloved centaurs in Greek myth. He was raised by Apollo, god of the sun, and Atermis, goddess of the moon, and became quite talented in many arts, such as medicine, music, archery, hunting and prophecy. His skills were so well known that he was even credited for being the founder of the botanical sciences. In mythology, he became the teacher of many heroes, including Achilles, Perseus and Jason of the Argonauts.
He died in order to secure a bargain with Zeus over the life of Prometheus, who gave mankind fire. Because Chiron was half titan, he was immortal. Chiron was pierced with a poisonous arrow made from the blood of the Hydra by Heracles. Because he gave up his immortality for such a noble cause, Zeus honored him by placing him in the stars as Sagittarius.
