They keep swimming, with the terrified Europa on his back, to the island of Crete, where he ravishes her and reveals his true identity. He then makes her the first queen of Crete and later shapes the stars into the constellation of Taurus. From their union, she bore three sons; including King Minos, who creates the cult of the bull in Crete.
The Taurus zodiac sign is also sometimes attributed to legend of Io, another one of Zeus’s mortal lovers. She was a priestess of Hera and the daughter of Inachus, who founded the very same cult. Zeus notices and pursues her, though she rejects his advances. Regardless, this is noticed by Hera herself, who in jealousy wanted revenge. Zeus, in order to hide Io from Hera, transforms her into a white cow. Hera could see through the transformation however, and sends Argus, the many eyed monster - to guard Io and prevent Zeus from visiting her, but it is slain by Hermes. Hera continues to persecute Io, sending gadflies to sting her and follow her as she wanders the world. She eventually reaches Egypt, where Zeus restores her to her human form. She bears Zeus two children, and later marries the King of Egypt.
